“Ballad of a Small Player” is shaping up to be one of Netflix’s most buzzworthy fall thrillers. Directed by “All Quiet on the Western Front’s” Edward Berger and starring Colin Farrell, the film is set in Macau, a neon-lit playground of high-stakes gambling, where fortunes—and lives—can change in an instant.

“Ballad of a Small Player” Premise
Based on Lawrence Osborne’s 2014 novel, the story follows Lord Doyle, a gambler with a troubled past who heads to Macau in search of escape, only to be pulled into something much deeper. Farrell plays Doyle with a mix of charm and weariness, and the trailer teases a man on the edge—haunted by debts, bad decisions, and maybe, a chance at redemption. When he meets a mysterious woman, his path begins to shift. But in a city built on risk, every connection feels like a gamble.

Macau itself plays a major role here, not just as a setting but almost as a character—its glitzy casinos and shadowy corners perfectly matching the film’s psychological intensity. Berger’s direction, paired with striking cinematography from James Friend, promises a visually rich experience. And Volker Bertelmann’s score is expected to heighten the tension at every turn.
“Ballad of a Small Player” will premiere in select U.S. theaters on October 15, with U.K. and Ireland screenings following on October 17. It hits Netflix worldwide on October 29. There’s also talk it could debut at a major film festival before then, which would give it even more momentum heading into awards season.
Behind the screenplay is Rowan Joffe (“28 Weeks Later”, “The American”), who adapts Osborne’s novel with a dark, cinematic edge. The cast is stacked—alongside Farrell are Tilda Swinton, Fala Chen, Deanie Ip, and Alex Jennings—each adding weight and complexity to the film’s emotional core.
It’s a big year for Farrell, who just earned his first Emmy nomination for “The Penguin”. His performance here could continue that hot streak, as Lord Doyle is the kind of layered, morally murky role that plays to his strengths.

At its core, the film is about risk—not just in cards, but in life. It explores what happens when we bet everything on a second chance, even if the odds are stacked against us. With themes of desperation, redemption, and the seductive pull of escape, “Ballad of a Small Player” looks ready to deliver a tense, beautifully shot psychological drama that sticks with you long after the credits roll.
Mark your calendars—this is one you’ll want to stream on Netflix (or catch early in theaters) this October.
