Since joining “Saturday Night Live” in 2019, Bowen Yang has become one of the show’s breakout stars, known for his sharp humor and vibrant presence. But in a recent PEOPLE interview, Yang opened up about the possibility of moving on from the iconic sketch show.

“SNL, it’s just this moving, living, breathing thing,” he notes, reflecting on how the show constantly evolves. The recent 50th anniversary special, which brought back a host of former cast members, gave him perspective. “Especially after the 50th, I’m seeing what life after the show is like and how beautiful it is, and how so many people, no matter how long they were at the show, are just with their families and loving their lives and not letting the years take away any of that experience for them.”

Yang sees that evolution as a natural part of the show’s rhythm. “Like I said, it’s this growing, living thing where new people come in and you do have to sort of make way for them and to grow and to keep elevating themselves,” he says. “And that inevitably requires me to sort of hang it up at some point — but I don’t know what the vision is yet.”

While he’s not rushing out the door, Yang is candid about how demanding the show can be. “The new season of SNL, I’m just like, ‘Oh, right. My time isn’t my own.’ And I tell my friends, ‘I’m not going to really see you guys until June,’” he says, acknowledging how the schedule leaves little room for a personal life.

Still, he’s excited about new opportunities, like starring in a remake of “The Wedding Banquet”, where he plays Chris, a nature guide navigating love, identity, and family expectations — and yes, even a nude scene. “Oh, she’s going to see my ass,” he joked about his mom eventually watching.

Though he’s unsure of what’s next, Yang is clearly open to change. Whether it’s more seasons at “SNL” or new projects ahead, his wit, warmth, and talent will continue to shine.
