Brett Goldstein Reveals the Bizarre Reason “Ted Lasso” Season 4 Feels Unreal

Brett Goldstein didn’t expect “Ted Lasso” to return for a fourth season — and apparently, neither did anyone else. The Emmy-winning actor and writer recently opened up about the surprise renewal on NPR’s Wild Card podcast, comparing the show’s revival to a childhood story involving a buried cat that somehow came back.

“I have a friend that I went to university with, and I think about this a lot,” he shared. “He had a cat that died… And he was a child. They buried the cat in the garden, and he lay in bed so sad, so upset and crying, and he prayed and he prayed and he wished. ‘I wish the cat would come back.’ And then the cat did come back, and it turned out the cat they buried wasn’t their cat. And I think about that all the time.”

“And so, I’m like, no wonder this guy is fucked in the head, because he thinks death isn’t real, so of course he’s insane. He’s such a weird guy, cause he thinks he can bring things back from the dead.”
“I guess I’m saying I feel like that kid,” Goldstein added. “Like, ‘We buried it… We all cried, we had a funeral. Are you saying we can bring anything back?’ It’s too much power.”
Brett Goldstein: A Look At His Career
While “Ted Lasso” was originally pitched as a three-season arc, the overwhelming love from fans — and Apple TV+ — changed the game. Goldstein is now back in the writers’ room, helping shape Season 4 with co-creators Jason Sudeikis, Brendan Hunt, Bill Lawrence, and Joe Kelly.
Goldstein isn’t just Roy Kent — he’s also a driving force behind the scenes. His work on “Ted Lasso” has earned him two Emmy Awards, and he’s been gaining critical acclaim as the co-creator of Apple TV+’s “Shrinking”, which recently wrapped its second season.

And he’s not slowing down — Goldstein’s HBO stand-up special, “Brett Goldstein: The Second Best Night of Your Life”, premieres Saturday, April 26. It’s his first hour-long special with the network and adds another win to his already stacked resume. He also is currently filming a romantic comedy for Netflix starring alongside Jennifer Lopez. He penned the script for the movie too!

As for “Ted Lasso”, Goldstein says the team is excited to explore what’s next. While plot details are still under wraps, fans can expect the same heart, humor, and maybe a few more unexpected resurrections.
