Delayed, canceled, rerouted—these are all common challenges during the holiday travel season. In “Carry-On,” holiday travel becomes even more difficult than usual. This new action flick will for sure be a hit movie during the holiday season. “Carry-On” is a highly anticipated film for Netflix because of the amazing cast and great premise. The first trailer was released today.
“Carry-On” Premise
The premise follows a “mysterious traveler (Bateman) who blackmails Ethan Kopek (Egerton), a young TSA agent, into allowing a dangerous package to slip through security and onto a Christmas Eve flight.”
The terrorist tricks Ethan into allowing an extremely dangerous carry-on package to bypass the security scanner and board a Christmas Eve flight. This puts everyone on the plane and at the airport in danger and puts their lives on the line adding major stakes for the film.
Cast and Behind The Scenes
“Carry-On” features an ensemble cast for the ages. Taron Egerton stars as Ethan Kopek. He is best known for his role as Elton John in “Rocketman,” for which he won a Golden Globe. Following that, he starred in Apple TV+’s miniseries “Black Bird,” earning both Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for his performance. Next, Egerton will appear in “Firebug,” another limited series for Apple TV+.
Jason Bateman is celebrated for his Golden Globe-winning role in “Arrested Development” and for his work in “Ozark,” where he starred, executive produced, and directed. He won an Emmy for directing an episode of the series dealing with the Mexican Drug Cartel. Bateman is a major star with numerous projects in development; he recently sold his successful podcast “Smartless,” co-hosted with Will Arnett and Sean Hayes, to Sirius XM for $100 million.
Logan Marshall-Green, Sofia Carson, and Danielle Deadwyler also appear in the film. Logan is known for his roles in series like “The O.C.” and the film “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” Sofia Carson, originally a Disney Channel star, gained fame from the “Descendants” movies and the Netflix romantic drama “Purple Hearts,” one of Netflix’s most-watched films. Danielle Deadwyler received universal acclaim for her performance in “Till” and in the series “Station Eleven.” She will next be seen in the film adaptation of August Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson,” where she is generating Oscar buzz for her performance.
Jaume Collet-Serra is a Spanish-American director best known for films like “Non-Stop,” starring Liam Neeson, another airport thriller. He also directed “The Shallows,” featuring Blake Lively, and “Black Adam,” the DC movie starring Dwayne Johnson. Collet-Serra will next direct “The Woman in the Yard,” an upcoming horror thriller set to be released in March next year, featuring Danielle Deadwyler, a star of “Carry-On.”
“Carry-On” was penned by T.J. Fixman, whose most recent credit in film or television was the 2016 animated movie “Ratchet & Clank,” based on the video game series. Academy Award nominated writer, Michael Green also helped on the script in later development stages. However, Fixman retains the sole writing credit for the film.
Ethan’s Character
“I think he’s someone who lacks a sense of drive and direction but is ultimately really resourceful and capable. He’s a bit of a hero in waiting,” Egerton tells Entertainment Weekly in an interview. “He’s pretty noble and selfless. He has all the qualities of an archetypal hero underneath the lack of direction. He’s unhappy at work at the airport and feeling flat and dejected about it. He’s also just found out his girlfriend is pregnant. So, he feels pressure to be a responsible father and provider, but I think he also feels a deep lack of fulfillment. So when he’s put in this terrible situation, he has a huge occasion to rise to.”
