Disney Announces Coco 2: Here’s What We Know About the Highly-Anticipated Sequel

A sequel to “Coco” is officially in the works at Pixar Animation Studios, as confirmed by Disney CEO Bob Iger. Speaking at Disney’s Annual Shareholder Meeting, Iger revealed that “Coco 2” is in early stages of development, with a theatrical release scheduled for 2029.
The Team Behind “Coco 2”
The sequel will bring back key members of the original “Coco” creative team. Oscar-winning director Lee Unkrich, co-director Adrian Molina, and producer Mark Nielsen, known for his work on Toy Story 4, are returning to guide the next chapter of Miguel’s story. While the film is still in its initial stages, Iger promised that it would be filled with humor, heart, and adventure, echoing the elements that made the original film so beloved.

“Coco” (2017) Premise
Released in 2017, “Coco” follows Miguel, a 12-year-old boy who dreams of becoming a musician, despite his family’s longstanding ban on music. When he’s accidentally transported to the Land of the Dead, Miguel embarks on a journey to find his great-great-grandfather, a deceased musician, and convince his family to allow him to pursue his musical dreams.

The film received widespread acclaim and won numerous awards, including two Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Remember Me,” written by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. It also won a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Animated, a BAFTA for Best Animated Film, and several Critics’ Choice Awards, including Best Animated Feature and Best Song.
What To Expect From “Coco 2”
Fans are eager to see how Miguel’s story will unfold in the sequel. Although plot details have not been revealed, “Coco 2” is expected to continue exploring themes of family, heritage, and remembrance, which were central to the first film. Bob Iger has teased that the sequel will capture the same blend of humor, heart, and adventure, continuing the tradition of storytelling that made the original film a hit with audiences worldwide.
“While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart and adventure, and we can’t wait to share more soon,” Disney CEO Bob Iger said.

Expanding the “Coco” Universe
In addition to the upcoming sequel, Disney is also working to expand the “Coco” franchise in new ways. A Coco-themed attraction is in development for Disney California Adventure, allowing fans to experience the colorful and lively world of the Land of the Dead firsthand.
With a release date set for 2029, the countdown to “Coco 2” has officially begun. While it will be a few years before the sequel hits theaters, the anticipation is already building, and fans are excited to see where the story goes next.
