Academy Award nominee, Cynthia Erivo is speaking out against a fan made “Wicked” poster that hides her face and eyes. The actress took to her Instagram story to share her thoughts on the poster. Last week, Wicked and Universal released a movie poster replicating the original 2003 Original Broadway Poster. Some die-hard fans took to social media to say that it did not match the iconic original poster and that they were disappointed. This led to lots of AI generated and fan made posters flooding the internet but one in particular got the attention of Elphaba herself.

On Oct. 16, Erivo shared a photo on her Instagram Stories of the edited poster, which hides Erivo’s character Elphaba’s eyes from view. The fan made poster is trying to replicate the iconic poster used by the original Broadway musical since 2003.

“This is the wildest, most offensive thing I have seen, equal to that awful AI of us fighting, equal to people posing the question ‘is your ***** green,’ Erivo wrote in a caption to her post. “None of this is funny. None of it is cute. It degrades me. It degrades us.”

“The original poster is an ILLUSTRATION,” she added. “I am a real life human being, who chose to look right down the barrel of the camera to you, the viewer … because, without words we communicate with our eyes.”

Erivo continued on saying that the poster “is an homage not an imitation” of the original show’s poster. “To edit my face and hide my eyes is to erase me,” she wrote. “And that is just deeply hurtful.”

The actress then proceeded to re-share the movie’s unedited and official poster on her story writing: “Let me put this right here, to remind you and cleanse your palette.”

“Wicked Part One” is out in theaters on November 22.
