Brad Pitt just scored one of the biggest wins of his career — not on the track, but at the box office.
“F1”: Big Opening Weekend at Box Office For Brad Pitt
The high-octane racing drama “F1“, directed by Joseph Kosinski (“Top Gun: Maverick”), pulled off a rare feat this weekend: an original film opening to over $50 million. After outperforming Sunday projections with a $15 million haul (down just 17% from Saturday), “F1” crossed the finish line with a roaring $58 million domestic debut, making it the best opening for an original film in 2025 so far.

According to Variety, early talks for a sequel are already heating up. Given the film’s strong word-of-mouth, premium format support, and A-list pedigree, it’s no surprise the studio wants to stay in the driver’s seat.
Backed by Apple Original Films and distributed by Warner Bros., “F1” was shot during actual Formula 1 races, blending high-speed realism with big-budget spectacle. The film’s rollout felt more like a summer action tentpole than a typical drama, and audiences responded. IMAX screenings in particular drove a significant chunk of the opening weekend total, reinforcing that moviegoers are still willing to show up for an experience they can’t get at home.

F1 now marks the second-biggest opening weekend of Brad Pitt’s career, behind only 2013’s World War Z ($66.4M). That’s more than a decade between major opening milestones, but “F1” is proving to be a different kind of beast — prestige, adrenaline-fueled, and original.
With early sequel discussions underway and a successful first lap behind it, “F1” may be just revving its engines.
