After more than two decades of fan requests, viral internet speculation, and countless questions from interviewers around the globe, “Freaky Friday” is officially getting its long-awaited sequel — and it’s shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases of the year. Titled “Freakier Friday”, the follow-up brings back Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, whose mother-daughter chemistry in the 2003 original helped catapult the film into Disney history.

“Freakier Friday”: A Long Time Coming
The sequel, which hits theaters on August 8, reunites the iconic duo with a fresh twist, a bigger family, and a heartfelt message about connection across generations.
“I was determined to make it happen because everywhere in the world I go for other work, all they want to talk about is Lindsay — and Freaky Friday,” Curtis said during an interview on Good Morning America Monday, where she appeared alongside Lohan. Curtis revealed that she “lobbied very hard” for the sequel, and her persistence clearly paid off. Directed by Nisha Ganatra (“Late Night”, “Transparent”), “Freakier Friday” has already become a viral sensation.
Curtis and Lohan first teamed up for the 2003 hit, which grossed over $160 million worldwide and quickly became a fan favorite thanks to its mix of heart, humor, and a standout performance from a then-teenage Lohan. The film solidified Lohan’s place as one of Disney’s most promising young stars and earned Curtis a Golden Globe nomination. In the years since, “Freaky Friday” has remained a nostalgic touchstone for millennials and Gen Z alike — with memes, rewatches, and Halloween costumes keeping its cultural legacy alive.

Now, 22 years later, Curtis and Lohan say their bond is stronger than ever.
“When we started, it felt like it was just yesterday, because we’ve known each other for so long and we’re friends off-screen,” Lohan shared. “That’s the beauty of being able to make Freakier Friday — you don’t too often get to work with people that you genuinely love and are your friends. So it didn’t feel like work as it normally did.”
Curtis echoed the sentiment: “I’ve known her since she was 15. We’ve stayed friends all the way through her teens and her twenties.”
In “Freakier Friday”, Lohan reprises her role as Anna Coleman, now a successful music producer engaged to a man named Eric — who comes with a 15-year-old daughter of his own. Anna also has a teenage daughter, Harper, and, as Curtis teases, the dynamics between the two girls add a new layer to the chaos.

“It’s a four-way switch,” Curtis revealed. “Lindsay’s character Anna, the music producer, is engaged to be married to a young man named Eric. He happens to have a 15-year-old daughter and Anna has a 15-year-old daughter named Harper. The soon-to-be sisters don’t get along very well.”
“And Tess is still micromanaging me as a mother,” Lohan joked.
“I’m not gonna tell you who switches with who,” Curtis added with a sly smile.
The premise — that lightning might just strike twice — blends the heart of the original with a modern family twist. It’s a story about blending families, growing pains, and the power of empathy.
Returning cast members from the 2003 film include Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, and Christina Vidal Mitchell. The sequel also brings in a new ensemble of comedic and dramatic talent, including Vanessa Bayer (Saturday Night Live), Julia Butters (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Manny Jacinto (The Good Place), Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (Never Have I Ever), and Sophia Hammons (Under Wraps). Lohan recently revealed that Jacinto plays her fiancé in the film.
The original “Freaky Friday” has become one of Disney’s most enduring live-action films, with countless reboots and adaptations across the decades — but none have captured audiences quite like the Curtis-Lohan version. With both stars now fully embracing their roles as mentors and icons, “Freakier Friday” isn’t just a sequel — it’s a celebration of growth, friendship, and coming full circle.
And if the early fan buzz is any indication, it may just pull off the rarest of Hollywood feats: a sequel that lives up to the magic of the original.
