Harrison Ford’s performance as Dr. Paul Rhoades in Apple TV+’s “Shrinking” has earned him his first-ever Emmy nomination — and behind that nuanced portrayal is a meaningful collaboration with longtime friend and Parkinson’s advocate Michael J. Fox.

Speaking to Variety, Ford emphasized just how vital Fox has been to his process, saying that being able to speak with him about the disease has been “essential.”

“Michael’s courage, his fortitude and his grace, more than anything else, is on full display,” Ford said. “He’s very smart, very brave, noble, generous, passionate guy, and an example to all of us, whether we’re facing Parkinson’s or not. You cannot help but recognize how amazing it is to have such grace.”

That respect carries over into Ford’s performance. While “Shrinking” is known for its humor and heart, Ford made clear that portraying Parkinson’s is not something he takes lightly. “The truth is that we can’t be f***ing around with this just to make a joke or anything. Parkinson’s is not funny. And I want to get it right. It’s necessary to be correct with what we do in respect of the challenge that Parkinson’s represents, and that we don’t use it for its entertainment value.”

With Fox joining the series in its upcoming third season, their real-life friendship and mutual respect will no doubt deepen the story’s emotional core. Through their collaboration, “Shrinking” continues to raise awareness while telling a deeply human story about illness, healing, and connection. “Shrinking” Season 3 is set to premiere on Apple TV+ later this year.
