Jenna Bush Hager Gives Netflix’s “The Residence” a Presidential Stamp of Approval

On the April 10 episode of “Today with Jenna & Friends“, actor Andrew Rannells—who’s set to appear in the upcoming “A Simple Favor 2” alongside Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively—joined Jenna Bush Hager to chat about his latest projects. But the spotlight quickly shifted from the silver screen to the White House, thanks to Netflix’s binge-worthy new series “The Residence“.
“We just finished,” Andrew Rannells, told Jenna Bush Hager about watching the series. The talk show host, who happens to be the daughter of former U.S. President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, added, “Oh yeah, my parents are watching that.” And clearly, they’re fans. According to Bush Hager, her parents “find it to be delightful.”

“The Residence” Premise and Cast
Set in the iconic White House, “The Residence” kicks off when a dead body is discovered on the third floor, triggering an investigation led by Cordelia Cupp (Uzo Aduba), the world’s quirkiest detective. Picture Clue meets The West Wing, with a dash of political scandal and razor-sharp comedy. This isn’t your typical murder mystery—it’s a chaotic, clever, and surprisingly heartfelt look at life behind the scenes at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
The show boasts a powerhouse cast, including Randall Park, Giancarlo Esposito, Susan Kelechi Watson, and more. Aduba shines as the brilliant, bird-watching detective whose quick wit and unconventional methods keep everyone on edge—and the audience guessing.

Jenna Bush Hager’s Reaction To “The Residence”
“It’s great!” Rannells said of the series, adding, “That must be odd for your parents watching that.”Jenna didn’t miss a beat. “So I guess Shonda Rhimes can do everything,” she said, praising the executive producer behind the series.
Curious about how authentic the fictional White House felt to someone who actually lived there, Rannells added, “Well, I would love to ask them how realistic was that set?” Jenna replied that her parents “thought it was good.” Rannells, who clearly enjoyed the series, insisted, “Take a look,” adding that it’s “very good.”

With its unique blend of genres—part screwball comedy, part political drama, and part whodunit—”The Residence” offers a refreshingly unpredictable ride through the inner workings of America’s most famous home. Think “Downton Abbey” with secrets, staff drama, and a murder thrown in for good measure. “The Residence” is currently streaming on Netflix.
