‘Empire’ Star Jussie Smollett Exonerated: “I Stand By What I’ve Always Said”
Now that the Illinois Supreme Court has overturned his conviction, Jussie Smollett is back in the headlines.
The Alleged Attack and Its Aftermath
In 2019, Smollett claimed he was the victim of a violent, racist, and homophobic attack in Chicago. He alleged that he was doused with gasoline and left with a noose around his neck. However, the subsequent investigation led prosecutors to assert that the incident was a hoax and that Smollett had paid the perpetrators to stage the assault.
In 2021, Smollett was convicted of disorderly conduct for filing false claims and sentenced to 150 days in jail. He was also ordered to pay significant fines and restitution. After serving six days behind bars, Smollett was released pending an appeal of the verdict. Despite the controversy and legal challenges, the actor has consistently maintained his innocence.
Following the incident, Smollett kept a relatively low profile but continued working in the entertainment industry. In 2021, he made his directorial debut with B-Boy Blues.
Supreme Court Exoneration
On Thursday, the Illinois Supreme Court overturned Smollett’s conviction for filing a false police report, concluding that he had been unjustly prosecuted. This decision comes years after the actor was accused of orchestrating the attack.
Smollett Speaks Out
In a recent interview with PopViewers, Smollett reflected on the controversy and reiterated his stance.
“I’m a very passionate person. I’m a very sensitive person. But I’m also a strong person… I’m a person of integrity,” he shared. “I stand by what I’ve always said, but again, that’s neither here nor there. If anybody doesn’t believe me or does believe me, that’s fine either way.”
He expressed confidence during the discussion, adding, “I think that truth is something that is like a life jacket, right? You could drag it down to the bottom of the ocean floor, but sooner or later, even if it takes a long time, it’s going to find its way to the shore.”
Support from Colleagues and Loved Ones
Despite public criticism, Smollett has consistently received support from friends, family, and colleagues. One vocal supporter is his The Lost Holiday co-star, Vivica A. Fox.
“We’ve known each other since he was eight years old. I love his family. I love him,” Fox stated.
Smollett also highlighted the importance of communication and understanding. “I think that in this day and age, we’ve become so used to talking at each other instead of talking to each other. That’s why there’s so much miscommunication, misunderstanding, and misinformation—because we’re not taking the time to truly know each other.”
Looking Ahead
Despite his legal battles, Jussie Smollett never allowed the controversy to stifle his creativity. With his talents back in focus, audiences are eager to see more of his impactful work.
