Netflix’s animated hit KPop Demon Hunters had fans singing their hearts out in theaters on Aug. 23 and 24 during a special two-day sing-along event. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film pulled in an estimated $17 million to $18 million from 1,700 theaters across North America, marking the streaming site’s first ever theatrical hit.
But, there’s a catch. CNBC reports that Netflix has never shared box office grosses publicly and declined to do so for this film. That means the numbers won’t show up on Comscore’s chart, leaving the top spot open for another movie.
Weapons, the latest horror sensation from New Line and Warner Bros., is holding onto the No. 1 spot for the third week straight, according to box office tracker, The Numbers. Raking in more than $15 million over the weekend the movie is now sitting at $199.6 million total.
Even without official box office numbers, KPop Demon Hunters is still a huge success. The Sony Pictures Animation film has been breaking records left and right. According to Netflix, the film is the second most popular English language movie on the streaming site with more than 180 million views. It has also claimed Netflix’s most watched film of all time.
The soundtrack is making history too, becoming the first since the ’90s to score four songs in Billboard’s Hot 100 top 10 at the same time. One track in particular, “Golden,” is sitting strong at No. 1 for the second week in a row.
Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the movie follows three girls living a double life. By day they’re a K-pop group, but behind the scenes they’re secretly fighting off demons disguised as boy-band idols. The voice cast includes Arden Cho, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Ahn Hyo-seop, Ken Jeong, and Daniel Dae Kim.
If you missed the global two-day sing along event, you can still catch Kpop Demon Hunters streaming now on Netflix.
