“I Had to Work Twice as Hard”: La La Anthony on Owning Her Role on “BMF” and Proving the Doubters Wrong

La La Anthony, the night’s guest of honor, was met with a packed room of fans, creatives, and cultural tastemakers there to celebrate her breakout role as Markeisha on the hit Starz drama. During an exclusive conversation moderated by PopViewers founder Chris Witherspoon, La La opened up about her character’s evolution, the impact of “BMF”, and how stepping into Markeisha’s shoes this season has been one of the most empowering chapters of her acting career.
Set against the rise of the infamous Flenory brothers, “BMF” continues to blend true crime, cultural commentary, and high-stakes drama. Now entering its fourth season, the series has only deepened its legacy—and La La’s portrayal of Markeisha adds both fire and finesse to the story’s complex female narrative.
When asked what she’s most excited for fans to see this season, La La Anthony shared:
“You really see her (Markeshia) step into her power. Now, whether we agree on how she’s doing it or not, it is just a search for her power, her identity, and her independence—so it was really fun to play. It was challenging at times, but I really dug deep, and I think people are going to be really excited to see her journey this season.”
La La Anthony Reflects on Doubters, Determination, and her Acting Evolution
Reflecting on her journey into acting, La La Anthony revealed:
“I wasn’t supported in the beginning of my quest to become an actor. I knew I was comfortable in front of the camera, but I never really felt like acting came naturally to me. It was really something I had to work at. So I dug into acting school and acting classes and really said, ‘I want to take this seriously.’ But really, at the time, you weren’t seeing people that were hosting transition to acting. Now people do multiple things—it wasn’t like that back then. If you were an MTV VJ, that’s what you were. If you were a radio host, that’s what you were. You weren’t multi-hyphenate.”

She recently announced Group Chat, a new Hulu comedy series inspired by her real-life friendship with Kim Kardashian and based loosely on her bestselling book “The Love Playbook”. Co-created by “Black-ish” creator Kenya Barris and executive produced by Kardashian, the series is poised to bring the drama, laughs, and real-life relatability to screens in a major way.
