“Leaving Neverland” Backstory

Robson and Safechuck allege that they were sexually abused by Jackson as children and are now suing Jackson’s companies for neglecting to protect them from the alleged abuse. The case, which has been tied up in legal battles for over a decade, reached a pivotal moment in 2023 when a California appeals court ruled that the case must go to trial, currently scheduled for next year.

Reed, who has been committed to documenting this deeply personal and controversial journey, is determined to be right there in the courtroom with his camera and crew. He says to Variety, “It’s taken an awful long time just to get to a trial date that looks as though it could actually happen.”

Despite this progress, Reed believes that Jackson’s estate will continue to fight the case and will “find a way to try and sideswipe this whole thing and make sure it never goes to court.” The documentary will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the emotional and legal hurdles Robson and Safechuck have faced in their decade-long struggle for accountability, with Reed committed to ensuring the world sees the trial unfold in real-time.
