10 New Surprisingly Cancelled Shows in 2024
There is so much television that not everything can survive poor ratings and a lack of critical support. Many shows led by A-list stars and producers are unfortunately axed before they get another chance to generate an audience. Here is a list of 10 shows that have been surprisingly canceled in 2024.
1. “The Flight Attendant”
“The Flight Attendant” is a comedic mystery thriller that stars Emmy nominee, Kaley Cuoco in the lead role as Cassie, a flight attendant who wakes up with a dead body next to her. The show’s premise is riveting and was a big success for Max in 2020 when it premiered over the holidays in the pandemic. While it was intended as a limited series, the show was left open for a second season and was quickly renewed for more.
The second season continued with more critical acclaim and earned Cuoco a second consecutive Emmy nomination. The second season was seen as a definite ending to the series with Cuoco stating that she expected it to be the end of the story that they wanted to tell of Cassie. Although, the series was officially announced to not be returning in January of 2024.
“What started out as an attention-grabbing book cover quickly evolved into an extraordinary flight of a lifetime,” Cuoco said in a statement. “I always envisioned TFA as a limited series and thanks to an incredible creative team, we were able to deliver two thrilling seasons. Personally, playing Cassie has been a dream come true and I am so grateful for everyone who played a part in bringing this extremely original series to life.”
2. “Uncoupled”
“Uncoupled” was a show that seemed destined for success but unfortunately never took off. Created by Darren Starr, the mind behind hit series like “Sex and the City” and “Emily in Paris,” it tells the story of Michael, a man abruptly dumped by his husband after seventeen years. Neil Patrick Harris plays Michael and also served as an executive producer on the series.
The show was canceled by Netflix after one season in 2023 but was picked up by Showtime a month later for a second season. However, due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes, it was canceled in March 2024, likely because it was not a top priority for Showtime following the strikes.
3. “The Other Black Girl”
“The Other Black Girl” was a series that premiered on Hulu in the fall of 2023. It was executive produced by Rashida Jones, who also wrote for the series. The show was adapted from the successful 2021 novel of the same name.
The cast included actors such as Ashleigh Murray, Brittany Adebumola, Eric McCormack, and Bellamy Young, all of whom received acclaim for their performances.
The series premise reads: “Nella Rogers is an editorial assistant at Wagner Books, a publishing house in New York City. As the only Black woman working for the company, she feels lonely, undervalued, and marginalized. Nella is excited when Wagner hires Hazel-May McCall, another Black woman, and the two quickly bond and become friends. Shortly thereafter, Nella receives a mysterious message instructing her to leave Wagner Books. Cracks form in Nella and Hazel’s friendship after Hazel’s advice gets Nella in trouble with her boss, and Wagner’s employees begin showing favoritism toward Hazel.”
The show was canceled after one season in May 2024.
4. “That 90s Show”
One of the recent cancellations is “That 90s Show” which was canceled after two seasons. The cancellation comes just over a month after Part 3 of the series was released on Netflix. The series never really found an audience that “That 70s Show” did and did not chart much at all on the Netflix viewership chart.
Multi-cam series have not often found success on streaming services. Netflix was most likely hoping to replicate the success of “Fuller House” which was a revival of the long running sitcom, “Full House”.
5. “Pretty Little Liars: Summer School”
Another revival that was canceled after two seasons is “Pretty Little Liars: Summer School”. The original series ran for eight years on ABC Family and found a large audience both commercially and culturally. Max took the chance on a revival for the streamer and it ran for two seasons. While fans of the show enjoyed it, it did not have a similar audience to the original.
However, critical acclaim was extremely positive for the series and it got a lot of love from the audience online. Currently, one of the leads Chandler Kinney is competing on “Dancing With The Stars” as one of the top dancers of the newest season.
6. “The Acolyte”
“The Acolyte” is a series a part of the “Star Wars” franchise for Disney+. The series premiered on the streamer in the summer of 2024 and was canceled after one season in August.
While critical support was mainly positive, fans of the franchise were much more divided. This led to a negative review bombing on critical sites like Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. Additionally, there were allegations of racism linked to the backlash. Some criticisms were framed as racist, or dismissive toward the show’s diverse cast, which included actors of various ethnic backgrounds. This controversy highlighted tensions around representation in media, with some viewers accusing others of harboring prejudiced views, complicating the overall discourse surrounding the series.
Ultimately, the combination of negative reviews and this divisive controversy may have contributed to decisions regarding the show’s future, including its cancellation.
7. “Time Bandits”
“Time Bandits” was a fantasy comedy series created by Academy Award winner Taika Waititi and starring “Friends” star Lisa Kudrow. The series premiered in July 2024 but struggled to find an audience and was quickly canceled just a few weeks after the first season ended.
While this may not have been a successful show for Kudrow, she is sure to have another chance at a big hit. In December, her new show “No Good Deed” premieres on Netflix. This mystery comedy was created by Liz Feldman and produced by Will Ferrell, the team behind “Dead to Me,” starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini. We hope Kudrow finds more success next time in a more traditional role!
8. “Life & Beth”
“Life & Beth” was a comedy series starring Emmy winner Amy Schumer that streamed for two seasons on Hulu. Schumer was a co-creator of the series in addition to starring in it. The dramedy followed Beth, a sales representative who reassesses her life following her mother’s death.
Amy Schumer has found immense success in the stand-up world, hosting “SNL,” having comedy specials, and even hosting the Academy Awards in 2022 alongside Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall.
9. “The D’Amelio Show”
Charli and Dixie D’Amelio rose to fame on social media in recent years and have found success as influencers on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. Their series first premiered on Hulu in 2021, following the lives of the family. The show lasted three seasons before being canceled by Hulu, and the family reportedly agreed with the streamer not to continue the series.
Charli D’Amelio has also found success outside of social media, becoming the winner of “Dancing With The Stars” and making her Broadway debut in the ensemble of “& Juliet” in 2024.
10. “Outer Range”
“Outer Range” is a sci-fi drama series that premiered on Amazon Prime Video. The show centers on Royal Abbott, a rancher in Wyoming, who discovers a mysterious void on his land that challenges his understanding of reality and time. As he grapples with personal and family struggles, the series intertwines elements of suspense, existential themes, and supernatural intrigue. The cast includes actors like Josh Brolin, who plays Royal Abbott, and Imogen Poots.
Despite its unique premise and a dedicated fanbase, “Outer Range” was canceled after two seasons, with Amazon deciding to shift its focus to other projects.
While we are sad that these shows were canceled, we are looking forward to all the exciting new premieres coming up this fall. Here is our list of new shows to support!
