“Blade” Delays Continue: From 2019 to 2025

“Mahershala is still attached,” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed during a recent studio briefing. Ali, a two-time Oscar winner, was announced as the new “Blade” in 2019 to massive fan excitement. However, since then, the film has faced multiple setbacks, including script rewrites, director changes, and delays—leaving fans wondering if it will ever happen.

Feige shared why it took so long to move forward with the project: “We didn’t want to simply just put a leather outfit on him and have him start killing vampires. It had to be unique,” he explained. “It fell into the time when we started pulling back and saying, ‘Only accept insanely great.’ And it wasn’t ‘insanely great’ at the time.”

Adding to the uncertainty, no director is currently attached to the film after two directors, Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange, dropped out. But Ali remains eager to take on the role, saying, “I’m ready. Call Marvel… I’m ready.”

Feige also joked about one of the delays: “The obstacle was, Ryan Coogler called and said, ‘We’d love some costumes for Sinners.’” The costumes, designed by Ruth E. Carter for a now-abandoned Blade project, were passed along to Coogler’s vampire movie. “We said, ‘Take ’em, man, no problem,’” Feige said. “He’s a good friend. Take our costumes. We’ll hold off on the movie.”

Despite the setbacks, Ali’s commitment and Marvel’s focus on crafting a unique and high-quality story keep fans hopeful. Until then, “Blade” remains one of the MCU’s most intriguing question marks.
