Meghan Markle is back on screen. Five years after stepping back from their royal duties, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, is explaining why she and Prince Harry have chosen to retain the Sussex name.

When they married in 2018, Prince Harry’s grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth, bestowed upon them the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex. True to British royal tradition, the couple, now parents to two children—Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3—adopted the surname Sussex. Meghan opened up about this decision in a recent interview with People and also revisited the topic in her new Netflix series, “With Love, Meghan”.

Meghan Markle on Family Name

“It’s our family name, and I hadn’t fully realized how much it would mean to me until we had children,” Meghan Markle shared. “I love that it’s something we all share—Archie, Lili, Harry, and I. It holds a lot of significance for me,”

She went on to explain that the name is “part of our love story” and that as their children get older, they will understand its deeper meaning. “I think as they grow, they’ll be so excited about hearing our story and how we met. Right now, though, the fact that we share the name Sussex is such a big part of our journey,” she added.

Her remarks were made ahead of the debut of her new lifestyle series, “With Love, Meghan”, which premiered on Netflix on March 4. The show follows Meghan as she engages in activities like cooking, gardening, and decorating, featuring celebrity guests along the way.

Mindy Kaling Appears in New Show

In one episode, which stars Mindy Kaling, Meghan touches on the topic of her last name again. “It’s funny that people still call me Meghan Markle,” she says. “I’m Sussex now.” She expressed how meaningful it feels to share a surname with her husband and children, adding, “Once you have kids, it’s powerful to share your name with them. I didn’t realize how significant it would be until I experienced it—it’s just so much.”

The series, Meghan explained, was only possible after Archie and Lilibet reached an age where they were less dependent on her. “Once the kids are old enough—when you’re no longer in the sandbox with them but able to reconnect with your own passions—it’s really joyful. As a woman, a mother, and a wife, it’s incredible to rediscover yourself as your children grow,” she said.

“With Love, Meghan” is streaming now on Netflix.
