Michelle Williams Delivers Her Best Performance Yet in “Dying for Sex” – Is an Emmy Win in Her Future?

While many TV shows have explored how people face the reality of impending death, “Dying for Sex” might just be the boldest and most irreverent take on the subject.
“Dying for Sex” Premise
Premiering April 4 on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ in the U.K., the comedy-drama stars Michelle Williams as Molly Kochan, a woman diagnosed with Stage IV cancer who decides to leave her husband of 15 years. With the time she has left, she embarks on a journey of self-discovery and sexual exploration, supported by her best friend Nikki Boyer, played by Jenny Slate.
This story is based on the real-life experiences of Molly Kochan, who tragically passed away in 2019 at age 45 but not before creating the “Dying for Sex” podcast with Boyer. By 2015, after undergoing chemotherapy, a mastectomy, radiation, and breast reconstruction, Kochan was re-diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer. Knowing her diagnosis was terminal, she chose to end her marriage and explore her sexual desires.

As fans of the popular “Dying for Sex” podcast already know, Molly’s real-life journey is filled with raw, candid moments. The podcast, which features over 200 of her sexual encounters, as well as stories of trauma, grief, and friendship, quickly became a sensation after its release in 2020. It was downloaded millions of times, and Kochan’s memoir, “Screw Cancer: Becoming Whole”, was published that same year.

Michelle Williams Generates Emmy Buzz
Michelle Williams is already generating major Emmy buzz, with many critics calling her performance in “Dying for Sex” her best yet. Her portrayal of Molly Kochan has been praised for its depth and vulnerability, capturing the raw emotions of a woman facing the end of her life while embarking on a bold journey of self-discovery. This standout performance is quickly becoming one of the most talked-about aspects of the series.

Elizabeth Meriwether, the creator of “New Girl” and “The Dropout”, adapted the podcast into a TV series alongside playwright Kim Rosenstock. The show stays true to Molly’s story, with Jay Duplass playing her ex-husband and a talented supporting cast including Rob Delaney, Sissy Spacek, Kelvin Yu, and David Rasche. Nikki Boyer, who played a key role in Molly’s life, serves as an executive producer, ensuring the series honors the real events behind the story. “Dying for Sex” premieres on FX and Hulu on April 4.
