Nicola Coughlan Teases “Full Pregnancy” of a Season Ahead in “Bridgerton” Season 4

Nicola Coughlan is giving fans something to swoon over with new hints about what’s in store for “Bridgerton” season 4. The beloved Netflix period drama, known for its opulent Regency-era aesthetics and steamy romance, is still deep in production — and according to Coughlan, the new season is taking its time for all the right reasons.

Speaking at the 2025 BAFTA Television Awards on Sunday, May 11, Coughlan, 38, offered a few playful teases about what viewers can expect when the Ton returns to their screens.
“What’s coming? Lots more romance,” Coughlan revealed in a video shared on X. “We’re shooting it still, takes a long time to shoot Bridgerton, takes about eight months, this one’s taken nine. So it’s a full pregnancy this season of Bridgerton.”
Indeed, “Bridgerton” has become a global phenomenon not just for its lavish costumes and ballrooms but for its rich storytelling and diverse approach to period romance. The series, based on Julia Quinn’s bestselling novels, quickly earned its place among Netflix’s biggest hits since debuting in 2020 — with each season centering on a different member of the “Bridgerton” family and their path to love.

Following the events of season 3, where Coughlan’s Penelope Featherington finally stepped into the spotlight and found her happily ever after with Colin Bridgerton (played by Luke Newton), season 4 is shifting the focus to new leads — while still keeping familiar faces in the mix.
“We got new leads this year, Luke Thompson, who we’re used to, Yerin Ha, who’s new and gorgeous, sort of a Cinderella story,” Coughlan said, hinting at a fresh romantic arc with all the emotional grandeur fans have come to expect.

And while her character’s days as the wallflower “Lady Whistledown” may be behind her, Penelope is still very much part of the story. “In terms of me, I’ve got a ginger baby. She’s a married woman, she’s a writer, but it’s delightful and gorgeous as always,” Coughlan added, referencing Penelope’s post-wedding chapter — complete with motherhood and, presumably, more secret writing.
Season 3 saw Penelope and Colin’s romance take center stage in a heart-melting storyline that took fans from longing stares to wedding vows, and even into married life with the arrival of their newborn son. The chemistry between Coughlan and Newton became a fan favorite, cementing their place in the Bridgerton love story pantheon.

And the numbers back it up — just months after its release, season 3 propelled “Bridgerton” into Netflix’s top 10 most-watched shows of all time as of July 2024, reaffirming the series’ continued reign as a pop culture juggernaut.
As production on season 4 continues, fans can look forward to more romance, more drama, and more reasons to binge — even if they’ll have to wait just a bit longer for the next social season to begin.
