This fall, HBO is serving up a lineup of must-watch TV, and topping the list is “Task“—a tense, morally tangled limited series from Brad Ingelsby, the creator of “Mare of Easttown”. Leading the charge is Mark Ruffalo as an FBI agent heading a special unit investigating a string of violent home invasion robberies in the working-class suburbs of Philadelphia.
Philadelphia’s gritty streets set the perfect backdrop for a story that blurs the lines between right and wrong. On one side: Ruffalo’s determined lawman. On the other: Tom Pelphrey as the mastermind behind the crimes, a family man whose motives are as complicated as they are questionable. “I’m going to take their money so we can have a better life,” he says in the trailer—hinting at the show’s central theme of moral ambiguity.

“Task” Cast and Background
The cast is stacked, with Emilia Jones, Jamie McShane, Sam Keeley, Thuso Mbedu, and Martha Plimpton joining Ruffalo and Pelphrey. Behind the camera, Ingelsby teams up with directors Jeremiah Zagar and Salli Richardson-Whitfield, ensuring a mix of tension, heart, and sharp storytelling.

“Task” isn’t just a crime drama—it digs into family, sacrifice, and the choices people make under pressure. With its layered characters, high-stakes plot, and HBO’s signature polish, this series is shaping up to be one of the season’s standouts.
“Task” premieres September 7 on HBO and Max.
