Wes Anderson’s latest film, “The Phoenician Scheme”, promises to be a captivating blend of dark comedy and family drama. The trailer, which dropped earlier this week, introduces Benicio del Toro in the role of Zsa-zsa Korda, a rugged arms dealer whose face is battered and bloodied after surviving six plane crashes. Zsa-zsa, who heads a powerful criminal empire, oversees nine sons but is determined to pass the reins to his one daughter, Liesl (played by Mia Threapleton), a nun with a surprising talent for wielding a knife.

In an interview with Le Monde in 2023, Anderson teased more about the film, noting that it would have a linear narrative, with Benicio del Toro appearing in every shot. He also revealed that the story would center on espionage and the complicated father-daughter relationship, all set against a darker tone than his previous works.
The Phoenician Scheme will have a limited release on May 30, before expanding to a nationwide rollout on June 6, courtesy of Focus Features. Written by Anderson and Roman Coppola, the film is produced by Indian Paintbrush and marks their third collaboration with Focus, following “Asteroid City” (2023) and “Moonrise Kingdom” (2012).
