What to Watch This Weekend

With the weather this holiday weekend looking iffy, now could be the perfect time to hunker down for a good movie or TV show. Perhaps you could even make your return to an ACTUAL movie theater!!! (Norma Desmond-vibes!) Here are our top picks!

Cruella

In theaters and available to rent on Disney+

Hide your puppies, because Cruella is back in action! In this live-action villain origin story, Emma Stone stars as a young grifter named Estella who dreams of making a name for herself as a designer. Her life changes when she catches the attention of fashion legend, Baroness von Hellman (played by Emma Thompson). It is this relationship that inspires Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the acerbic Cruella de Vil we know her as today. If early reviews are to be trusted, audiences can expect campy chaos that you won’t want to look away from.

Friends: The Reunion

Watch on HBO Max

So no one told you life was gonna be this way… clap clap clap clap clap! The gang from “Friends” is headed back to their iconic orange sofa to spill all of the Central Perk coffee. Filmed on the show’s original Burbank soundstage, this reunion will feature an episode table read and an in-depth Q&A about cast members’ memories of filming the show. They’re truly always there for you…. (plus it doesn’t hurt that each actor is allegedly getting over $2 million each to appear.)

A Quiet Place Part II

In Theaters

John Krasinski’s first “A Quiet Place” made some serious noise when it opened back in 2018. This sequel finds the Abbott family facing the terrors of the outside world as they continue to fight for their survival in silence. Starring Emily Blunt, Cillian Murphy, Millicent Simmonds, and Noah Jupe this horror film maintains its heart while also expanding the nerve-wracking world established in the first movie.

But wait… there’s more!

Oslo (Watch on HBO, Saturday 8 pm ET)

An adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway hit, “Oslo” centers around a Norwegian couple who find themselves in the middle of the secret peace talks between Israel and Palestine that lead to the Oslo Accords during the early 1990s.

Plan B (Watch on Hulu)

This raunchy teen sex comedy set in South Dakota tackles reproductive rights in America. After a first sexual encounter gone wrong, a straight-laced student and her best friend set out on a 24-hour road trip to reach the only Planned Parenthood in the state.

Tulsa Burning: The 1921 Race Massacre (Sunday, 8 p.m. on the History Channel)

100 years after the attack on Black Wall Street, this documentary reveals the history behind one of the single worst acts of racial violence in American history. For too long the attacks in Tulsa have gone unspoken about in history classes. It’s about time that we start recognizing this tragic part of American history.

Launchpad (Watch on Disney +)

Disney is putting their money where their mouth is with this collection of live-action shorts made by six filmmakers from underrepresented backgrounds. This first set of shorts dropping on Friday are based on the theme, “Discover.” You never know… you could be watching the early work of the next big-time director!

Panic (Watch on Amazon Prime Video)

We’ve all seen stories about wanting to escape your rural small town- but you’ve never seen one with stakes this high! In this YA thriller, graduating high school seniors play a deadly game that forces them to face their deepest fears in order to win enough money to get out of town.

High on the Hog (Watch on Netflix)

This four-part series explores how much of what we consider American cuisine originated from the African American population, many of whom were enslaved at the time.
