What to Watch This Weekend

Juneteenth, which is commemorated on June 19th, celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. As of yesterday, President Biden signed legislation making this the first federal Juneteenth holiday in history! In honor of the holiday, we're bringing you a Juneteenth-themed weekend watch list! Here's the scoop on all of the special programming happening!

This new Kevin Hart film arrives just in time for both Father’s Day weekend and Juneteenth! It’s a heartwarming true story about a father who brings up his baby girl as a single parent after the unexpected death of his wife. We all know Kevin Hart as a comedian, but audiences will be blown away by his dramatic turn here. PS- did we mention that it’s produced by the Obamas?!? This is definitely one you’re gonna want to watch with some tissues nearby!

Juneteenth: Together We Triumph – A ‘Soul of a Nation’ Special Event

Watch on ABC- Friday, June 18 (9-11pm ET)9:01-11:00 p.m. EDT

For the second year in a row, ABC is broadcasting a special to honor the significance and history of Juneteenth. This two-hour event will be hosted by Leslie Odom Jr. and will feature performances by Chloe Bailey, Leon Bridges, and Jimmie Allen. Oh right… some unknown named Barack Obama will also be sitting down for an interview with Michael Strahan.

Rise Again: Tulsa and the Red Summer

Watch on National Geographic- Friday, June 18 (9 pm ET) // Available same-day on Hulu

100 years after the Tulsa race massacre, this new National Geographic documentary follows journalist DeNeen Brown, as she unpacks the events leading up to this horrendous act of racial violence. Tragically, the Tulsa attacks have gone unspoken about in American history classes for far too long. If you’re unfamiliar with this history, the weekend of Juneteenth is the perfect time to learn more.
