What to Watch This Weekend

From docudramas to documentaries to drag queens- there's something to watch for everyone this weekend!

Impeachment: American Crime Story

Watch on FX

After covering the O.J. Simpson trial and the assassination of Gianni Versace, FX’s hit anthology series is back for a deep dive into the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal. The series stars Sarah Paulson as Linda Tripp and Beanie Feldstein as Monica Lewinsky and sees this much-told story through the eyes of the women involved. For some viewers, this may be their first real exposure to this scandal that rocked the 90s. For those who remember this story like it was yesterday, this docudrama should offer new insight and a chance to view this history from a perspective that you might not have considered in the past.

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie

Watch on Amazon Prime and in Theaters

He’s a blockbuster and you don’t even know it! (Yet- that is!) This musical that became a smash hit in the UK is now strutting its way onto the big screen. It’s a story about a 16-year-old boy who doesn’t fit in and dreams of being a drag star. Think Billy Elliot but in sequins! He’s supported by his loving mother, a fierce best friend, and ultimately his classmates who all eventually come around to seeing that Jamie has something special to offer the world. This is the feel-good, be-yourself celebration that the world could use right now!

Blood Brothers: Malcolm X & Muhammad Ali

Watch on Netflix

This new documentary explores the important bond forged between the human rights activist and heavyweight boxing champion in a way that viewers have never seen before. (This is saying something considering the volume of books and stories written about these two men.) The film focuses on the three-year stretch in the 1960s that the men became close and uncovers the issues that led to them splitting apart. Along with archival footage of the two men, this documentary also features interviews with some of their family members.

Further Viewing:

MALIGNANT (Watch in Theaters and on HBO Max)

Let’s face it- at some point this year we’ve all probably woken up from a terrible nightmare only to discover that it’s our reality. This horror film is like that, but just much, much scarier.

QUEEN SUGAR: Season 6 (Watch on OWN)

Ava Duverney and Oprah Winfrey’s series about the estranged Bordelon siblings in Louisiana is back for a sixth season. The new episodes will dive into the realities of the COVID-19 pandemic while also throwing viewers some major bombshells. Sounds pretty sweet to us!

COME FROM AWAY (Watch on Apple TV+)

Missing live theater? Apple TV+ has captured the hit Broadway musical live on stage and will air it just in time for the 20th anniversary of the 911 attacks. The musical tells the true story of when 38 planes were unexpectedly diverted to the small town of Gander in Newfoundland, Canada. It’s a story that highlights how, even during the darkest of times, human kindness can conquer all.

DAYS OF OUR LIVES: BEYOND SALEM (Watch on Peacock)

The classic soap opera “Days Of Our Lives” is coming to Peacock with this miniseries spin-off. Expect a campy delight featuring your favorite characters from the show’s past. Let’s be real- we could all use a campy delight from time to time!

REAL HOUSEWIVES OF SALT LAKE CITY: Season 2 (Watch on Bravo)

The Salt Lake City housewives are back for a second season, and if the episodes are anything like the explosive season opener teased by Bravo earlier this week, we are in for QUITE the season. Some might even say, Shah-mazing!

AMERICAN RUST (Watch on Showtime)

Jeff Daniels stars as a police chief in a small southwest Pennsylvania town who grapples with how far he’s willing to go to protect the son of the woman he loves after he’s accused of murder. If you’re thinking that this sounds a lot like “Mare of Easttown” you’re not wrong!

KACEY MUSGRAVES: STAR-CROSSED (Watch on Paramount+)

Pulling a page from Beyoncé’s playbook, Kacey Musgraves is releasing her latest album this weekend accompanied by an entire companion film. The film, like the album, is billed as a “tragedy in three parts” -inspired by Shakespeare and taking viewers on a journey from the early stages of marriage through the aftermath of divorce.

Doja Cat hosts this year’s VMAs which will feature performances by Justin Bieber, Camila Cabello, Shawn Mendes, Kacey Musgraves, Lil Nas X, Machine Gun Kelly, Olivia Rodrigo, Twenty One Pilots, and many more!
