Need help figuring out what to watch this weekend?

From dark comedy mysteries and true-crime drama to superhero chaos and a heartfelt documentary, this week’s new releases cover just about every vibe. Whether you’re in the mood to laugh, binge, or science fiction drama, here are the movies and shows you’ll want on your radar!

1) Honey Don’t! (Watch in Theatres)

Margaret Qualley stars as Honey O’Donahue, in Honey Don’t!, the latest project co-written by Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke. As part of their ongoing lesbian B-movie trilogy, Honey Dont!, follows O’Donahue, a queer private investigator looking into the death of a young woman connected to a shady church. This murder mystery also features Chris Evans, Charlie Day, Aubrey Plaza, Billy Eichner and more.

Mixing comedy, queerness, and plenty of mystery, Honey Don’t! carries the same wild energy as its predecessor Drive Away Dolls. If you loved that one, or enjoy a wild mystery ride, this is one to catch in theaters starting today, Friday, Aug. 22.

2) K-Pop Demon Hunters (Watch on Netflix and in Theaters)

Netflix’s most watched original film, KPop Demon Hunters is heading to the big screen  for a two-day sing along event, on Aug. 23 and 24. The animated film debuted in June and follows three girls living a double life. By day they’re a chart-topping K-pop group, but behind the scenes they’re secretly fighting off demons disguised as boy-band idols.

The star-studded voice cast includes Arden Cho, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Ahn Hyo-seop, Ken Jeong, and Daniel Dae Kim. According to USA Today, the event is already a major success, set to appear on 1,700 screens across the U.S. and Canada, with more than 1,000 showings already sold out.

This two-day event is global too, with screenings also happening in Australia, New Zealand, and the U.K. KPop Demon Hunters hits theaters this weekend, Saturday, Aug. 23.

3) The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox (Hulu)

Based on one of the most talked about true crime cases of the 2000s, The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox follows Grace Van Patten as Knox. A 20-year-old American exchange student in Italy who was wrongfully convicted, acquitted, and later re-convicted in the 2007 murder of her roommate, Meredith Kercher. 

Executive produced by Monica Lewinsky and Knox herself, the eight-part drama retells Knox’s four years in Italian prison, while also exploring how the case impacted her family, her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, Kercher’s family, and even the Italian magistrate Giuliano Mignini.

The cast features Anna Van Patten, Giuseppe De Domenico, Sharon Horgan, Joe Lanza, Crosby Fitzgerald, and Jared Canfield. 

Hulu dropped the first two episodes on Aug. 20, with new episodes rolling out every Wednesday until the finale on Oct. 1.

4) Peacemaker Season 2 (HBO MAX)

Three years after the first season, Peacemaker is back! John Cena returns as Chris “Peacemaker” Smith, in this DC-comic inspired TV series. After leaving The Suicide Squad to join a new mission in exchange for time off his prison sentence, Peacemaker finds himself in an alternate universe where he has a completely different life. 

The whole 11th Street Kids gang will be returning too, including Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo. Freddie Stroma as Vigilante, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, and Steve Agee as John Economos. Robert Patrick will also return as The White Dragon, and Nhut Le is back as Judomaster.

According to The Hollywood Reporter The new season written by James Gunn will also feature characters from Gunn’s Superman, like Nathan Fillion as the Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and more.

Peacemaker Season 2 drops Thursday, Aug. 21, on HBO Max.

5) Invasion Season 3 (Watch on AppleTV+ and Prime)

Invasion returns for a third season following Earth’s invasion and near destruction through the eyes of people around the world including a mother of two, A JASA communications specialist who can also communicate with the aliens. A Navy Seal, and two children, with a unique connection to the extraterrestrials. 

The cast you know and love is returning, including Golshifteh Farahani, Shioli Kutsuna, Shamier Anderson, India Brown, Shane Zaza, Enver Gjokaj, Billy Barratt, Ashton Sanders, and Eric Lange. Erika Alexander is also joining this season as a new series regular.

If drama, science fiction, and aliens are your thing, don’t miss Invasion Season 3 premiering today, Friday, Aug. 22 on Apple TV+ and Prime.

6) The Second Set (Watch on Tubi)

Naomi Osaka is making her return to pro tennis after taking time off to give birth, and she’s sharing the journey in a brand-new documentary, The Second Set.

Produced by Nike and Hana Kuma, the documentary offers an intimate look at Osaka’s life as she balances motherhood with her career on the court. The Tubi Exclusive Documentary, The Second Set premieres on Sunday, Aug.24
