As previously shared by Deadline, Netflix is officially moving forward with a pilot for “A Different World“, a sequel to the beloved 1987 sitcom. This next chapter will focus on the college journey of Deborah Wayne—the daughter of fan-favorite couple Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne—at a historically Black college or university (HBCU). The project has been quietly in development at Netflix since last year, and greenlighting the pilot is the latest step in bringing the vision to life.

“A Different World”: A Strategic Step, Not A Series Shift

Although Netflix typically orders full seasons, insiders clarify that producing a standalone pilot in this case isn’t signaling a broader change in approach. Rather, pilots are still a common practice in comedy, offering a chance to fine-tune tone, character chemistry, comedic rhythm, and the overall vibe before committing to a full series. This pilot will do exactly that—give the creative team room to explore how everything plays out on screen and ensure it captures the heart and humor of the original.

Netflix has assembled a dynamic young cast to portray the next generation of Hillman College students in the upcoming “A Different World” revival. The pilot will feature Chibuikem Uche as Kojo, Maleah Joi Moon as Deborah, Cornell Young as Shaquille, Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir, Alijah Kai Higgins as Haggins, and Kennedi McClure as Hazel.

At the heart of the story is Deborah, played by Maleah Joi Moon, who is the daughter of original characters Whitley and Dwayne. Much like the original series, this new iteration will dive into the experiences of college life—navigating friendships, love, identity, and all the ups and downs that come with growing into adulthood.

“A Different World” Netflix Spinoff

The revival is being led by writer and executive producer Felicia Pride, with legendary talent Debbie Allen directing the pilot. They’re joined by executive producers Mandy Summers, Tom Werner, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Reggie Bythewood—many of whom were deeply involved in the original series. Their presence helps ensure the reboot stays true to its roots while forging a path that feels current and relevant.

Interestingly, the sequel was initially pitched as a single-camera comedy—a shift from the multi-camera format of the original show. It’s still unclear whether that has changed, but Allen is experienced in directing both styles, giving the team plenty of creative flexibility. Production is expected to begin in June, with Atlanta serving as the filming location.

For those who need a refresher: “A Different World” spun off from The Cosby Show and followed Denise Huxtable (played by Lisa Bonet) as she began life at the fictional Hillman College, an HBCU. Although Bonet left after the first season, the show flourished with an ensemble cast including Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Dawnn Lewis, Sinbad, Darryl M. Bell, Cree Summer, Charnele Brown, and Glynn Turman.

The show’s second season hit its stride with a new creative direction and a central romance between Whitley and Dwayne—one of the most iconic TV couples of the era. Now, their story continues through their daughter, Deborah. While it hasn’t been confirmed if the revival will return to Hillman College itself, that was the original intention. Deadline first reported the news.
