The latest Captain America movie, “Brave New World”, has already sparked a storm of reactions. On one hand, Washington Post entertainment reporter Herb Scribner called it an “absolute blast,” praising its story and saying it “checked so many boxes” for him. He felt the film reminded him of a classic MCU movie where “other projects actually matter again” and praised its “lots of cohesion.”
But not everyone shares that enthusiasm. Film critic Cris Parker said the movie “didn’t quite hit the emotional or narrative highs I was hoping for.” While he loved Anthony Mackie’s portrayal of Captain America and appreciated the more serious tone, he felt the film “did feel slightly empty.” Emmanuel Noisette echoed Parker’s thoughts, calling the movie “grounded, entertaining, and to the point,” with “solid action & mild surprises.” However, he also felt the movie “pulled a LOT of political punches” and questioned whether the marketing showed too much, calling the overall experience “average.”
“Captain America”: A New Era for the Franchise
On the flip side, entertainment writer Chris Gallardo agreed with Scribner, declaring that Brave New World “proves Anthony Mackie has RIGHTFULLY EARNED the role of Captain America.” He praised Mackie’s chemistry with Danny Ramirez and Harrison Ford’s charm as President Ross/Red Hulk, noting that “the action really rocks when it happens.”
The movie also boasts an impressive supporting cast, with Danny Ramirez as the new Falcon, Harrison Ford as President Ross, and Giancarlo Esposito as the villain, Sidewinder. The MCU’s increasing diversity is also being lauded.
The story weaves in conspiracy, political intrigue, and a global battle for adamantium. While some appreciate the complexity, others feel it plays it a little too safe and doesn’t live up to its bold “Brave New World” title.
When the action hits, it’s a spectacle—shield-slinging and epic battles. But some critics feel there’s not enough of it, with the action leaving them wanting more.
So, while “Brave New World” is clearly stirring up strong reactions, whether it’s a triumph or a miss seems to come down to personal taste—some are all-in, while others are left with mixed feelings. “Brave New World” is out in theaters on Friday.
