Dick Van Dyke recently reminisced about his iconic collaboration with Julie Andrews in “Mary Poppins” and reflected on their enduring friendship to People Magazine. The 1964 classic, which showcased their unforgettable performances as Bert and Mary Poppins, continues to captivate audiences.
Dick Van Dyke on Julie Andrews
Van Dyke fondly recalled their time working together, describing Andrews as “as sweet as she could be” and recalling how she patiently guided him through some of the film’s musical numbers. “Think high. Think up there,” she would encourage him, a sentiment that left a lasting impression on him.
Van Dyke also shared his wish that Andrews had joined him in “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” (1968), where he envisioned her in the role of Truly Scrumptious. Unfortunately, Andrews chose to step away from children’s films at that time, and the role went to Sally Ann Howes. Van Dyke mused, “I would’ve liked Julie to be in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” hinting at how their chemistry in “Mary Poppins” would have translated beautifully to another classic film.
Though they haven’t worked together for years, the bond between Van Dyke and Andrews remains strong. Van Dyke’s wife, Arlene, revealed that the two stars often celebrate each other’s achievements through video messages, despite the geographical distance—Andrews now lives in Switzerland.
At 99 years old, Van Dyke’s passion for performing is still evident. He remains active in the industry, hoping to achieve an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) by his 100th birthday. His love for acting and performing is clear when he says, “I love what I’m doing.” Though another collaboration with Andrews may not be in the cards, their Mary Poppins legacy continues to inspire and delight new generations.
