Saturday Night Live may have just flirted with an FCC fine — and this time, the cast had nothing to do with it.
On the latest episode, fan-favorite Ego Nwodim brought the house down during Weekend Update with her character “Ms. Eggy,” a hilariously unfiltered stand-up comic who stepped in as a potential host for the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, following Amber Ruffin’s reported exit. What followed was a chaotic, call-and-response comedy bit that turned into one of the most unpredictable live TV moments in recent memory.
As “Ms. Eggy,” Nwodim riffed on everything from chicken dinners to trifling husbands, eventually inviting the studio audience to join in. She set them up with: “Ms. Eggy don’t—” and the crowd dutifully responded, “Play!” But things got spicy fast when she later joked: “These men ain’t what?” and extended the mic for another answer.
Let’s just say… the audience got a little too comfortable.
On the live East Coast broadcast, the response sounded very much like a chorus of “sh-t,” which forced NBC’s censors into panic mode. The moment was quickly muted in later versions of the episode (including replays and on Peacock), but the damage — and the laughs — were already done.
The best part? Ego didn’t miss a beat. Laughing through the chaos, she cracked, “We finna get fined for that!” and then corrected the crowd: “I was going for ‘worth a damn, sucka!’”
Meanwhile, Colin Jost looked like he’d just seen a ghost, throwing his hands up in disbelief, and Michael Che nearly fell off his chair laughing. Ego, ever the pro, kept it moving and told the rowdy crowd: “Y’all gonna have to pay for that. Lorne gonna be mad at y’all!”
The moment has since gone viral — though any trace of the original audio has been scrubbed from SNL’s social media clips. Still, screenshots of Che and Jost’s stunned reactions, paired with Ego’s radiant “Did y’all really do that?!” face, are making the rounds.
FCC fine or not, this might go down as one of the funniest — and most unplanned — Weekend Update moments in recent SNL history.
