Nearly four decades after taking a legendary day off, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” co-stars Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck are revving up for another adventure — this time in “The Best Is Yet To Come”, a comedy from writer Allan Loeb and director Jon Turteltaub. The project, based on the 2019 French film of the same name, is being produced by MRC, with Lionsgate currently in discussions to distribute.

The film follows two lifelong friends who embark on a whirlwind road trip sparked by a dramatic misunderstanding and a race against time. As they search for the estranged son of one of the men, the duo also sets out to check off long-neglected dreams and goals — all while trying to make sense of life’s second act.

Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck’s Friendship and History From “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” To Now

Broderick and Ruck, who became iconic as Ferris and Cameron in John Hughes’ 1986 classic, haven’t shared the screen since that unforgettable spin in a 1961 Ferrari. But despite going their separate ways professionally, the actors have maintained a strong off-screen friendship. In fact, Ruck once joked about a potential reunion during a 2020 interview with Entertainment Weekly, imagining a sequel where “Cameron’s in a nursing home, and Ferris comes and breaks him out.”

“The Best Is Yet To Come” might not be that nursing home caper, but it’s certainly tapping into a similar spirit — aging friends facing unfinished business, and a journey that’s as much about the past as it is the future.

Matthew Broderick has enjoyed a diverse and enduring career since his iconic turn as Ferris Bueller. Following the 1986 classic, he continued to balance film, television, and stage roles, earning acclaim for his voice work as Simba in Disney’s “The Lion King” and for his performances in films like “Election”, “The Cable Guy”, and “You Can Count on Me”. A two-time Tony Award winner, Broderick has also made his mark on Broadway, starring in celebrated productions such as “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” and “The Producers” alongside Nathan Lane.

More recently, he’s taken on character-driven roles in series like “Better Things” and “Painkiller”, while continuing to appear in both indie films and network comedies, proving his range and staying power in Hollywood.

Alan Ruck, best known as the anxious and reluctant Cameron Frye, has built a steady career as a character actor with a knack for both comedy and drama. In the years since “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”, Ruck has appeared in a wide range of projects, from action blockbusters like “Speed” and disaster flicks like “Twister”, to sitcoms including “Spin City”, where he played the lovable and bumbling Stuart Bondek.

His profile surged again with his standout role as Connor Roy, the delusional eldest son in HBO’s Emmy-winning series “Succession”, earning him new critical acclaim and a fresh generation of fans. Ruck has proven his ability to evolve with the times, bringing depth and dry wit to every role he takes on.

For fans of Ferris Bueller and newcomers alike, this new project promises a blend of heart, humor, and nostalgia-fueled charm — and a reminder that even decades later, the ride isn’t over.
