Appearing on the Today Show, Golding expressed the excitement surrounding the project. “Everybody’s excited,” he said. He also revealed that he had recently caught up with his Crazy Rich Asians co-star Awkwafina, a fellow New Yorker, to discuss the series. “I was with Nora, Awkwafina, the other night, and we were talking about it. We had Adele Lim come over to visit me and Gemma [Chan] in London not too long ago to discuss where we’re heading,” he explained.

Golding shared that the series will offer a much broader and deeper exploration of the world introduced in the film, with a “larger, longer-running format” that gives them the opportunity to explore the story in ways that a film simply couldn’t. “We have so much runway to really share the world you kind of got a glimpse of in Crazy Rich,” Golding added. “We’re really excited to show more.”

Though Golding did not confirm his official involvement in the series, it’s clear that the key players are eager to dive back into their roles and expand upon their characters’ stories for the small screen.

As previously reported by Deadline, the series is in active development, with Adele Lim leading the charge as executive producer, writer, and showrunner. Lim is joined by Jon M. Chu, who directed the film, and Kevin Kwan, the author of the “Crazy Rich Asians” book series, who are also executive producers.

While discussions about bringing back the original cast have been ongoing, the series will not replace the long-awaited “Crazy Rich Asians” sequel that continues to be developed by Chu and Warner Bros. Pictures. Max has confirmed that the series will be a drama based on Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians series of books, which also includes China Rich Girlfriend, Rich People Problems, and Lies and Weddings.

“Crazy Rich Asians”: Cast and Groundbreaking For Rom-Com Genre

For those unfamiliar with the plot, “Crazy Rich Asians” (both the book and the film) follows Chinese-American Rachel (played by Constance Wu) as she travels to Singapore with her fiancé Nick (played by Henry Golding) to visit his wealthy family. There, Rachel learns some shocking truths before her wedding day—including the fact that Nick’s family is extraordinarily wealthy. The film’s star-studded cast includes Michelle Yeoh, Harry Shum Jr., Nico Santos, Ronny Chieng, Jimmy O. Yang, Ken Jeong, and Lisa Lu, among many others.

“Crazy Rich Asians” made history as a groundbreaking film for representation, marking the first time in over 25 years that a Hollywood studio film featured an all-Asian cast in a major romantic comedy. The film shattered stereotypes and provided a much-needed platform for Asian actors, directors, and storytellers in mainstream cinema.

With its vibrant depiction of Asian culture, stunning visuals, and witty storytelling, the film became a cultural phenomenon and a massive commercial success. It grossed over $239 million worldwide, proving that diverse narratives resonate with global audiences. “Crazy Rich Asians” not only revitalized the romantic comedy genre but also showcased the power of inclusive representation in Hollywood, paving the way for more diverse films in the industry.
