Paul Feig’s Vision
“My goal with this movie and this cast was to just make the most fun movie that people have seen in a long time,” said illustrious director Paul Feig during a virtual press conference for the upcoming Amazon MGM Studios production, “Jackpot.” Feig, known for his collaborations with Melissa McCarthy, shared his vision: “It’s the Jackie Chan movie I always wanted to make. It’s an action comedy. I love that from my movies ‘Spy’ and ‘The Heat’. It was just a chance to make a very fun, silly, but also kind of emotional story about someone in over their head.”
The Plot
“Jackpot” stars John Cena, Awkwafina, and Simu Liu and is all about delivering laughs. Set in a dystopian Los Angeles in 2030, the movie follows Katie (Awkwafina), a struggling actress who finds a winning lottery ticket. But there’s a deadly twist—California has legalized a game where anyone with a losing ticket can claim the jackpot by eliminating the winner before sundown. Katie’s survival hinges on Noel Cassidy, an amateur lottery protection agent played by John Cena. As they navigate a landscape of would-be assassins, they must trust each other to stay alive.
The Characters
Adding to the chaos is Louis Lewis, a rival lottery protector played by Simu Liu, who wants to claim Katie’s prize for himself. Feig’s knack for blending action and comedy promises an exhilarating and hilarious ride. Golden Globe winner Awkwafina highlighted the film’s depth, saying, “There are a lot of messages in it that go beyond a typical action comedy. There is a lot of heart and emotion. It has its own style—the way it’s shot, its own language of physical comedy. I hope people just enjoy it.”
On-Screen Chemistry
John Cena praised his co-star Awkwafina: “Nora (Awkwafina) was great. You just created an environment where I wasn’t ashamed to be myself. We all have talents, strengths, and gifts, and I think that when we get to flex those muscles and learn a little bit along the way, we can make something good.” He also talked about the intense action scenes: “My concern is always safety, but I always want to do as much of the activity as possible. What I loved about a lot of the action in this film is that it is comical but also realistic.”
Stunt Mishaps
Simu Liu, fresh off his role as a Ken doll in “Barbie,” shared his own stunt mishap: “Do you remember when I sent a stunt guy to the hospital? It was a scene where I was supposed to do a back kick, and I couldn’t really see where I was kicking. In this one take, wires got crossed, things happened, and I just felt so, so bad. That guy was back on set within an hour.”
The Heart of “Jackpot”
At its core, “Jackpot” is about survival and resilience. Katie’s journey from struggling actress to hunted lottery winner is a metaphor for the challenges we all face in pursuit of our dreams. Through her determination and unlikely alliances, the film reminds us that there’s always hope, even in the darkest times. “I couldn’t be prouder of this movie and I think it is exactly what we need right now,” Feig said.
Social Commentary
“Jackpot” also offers a commentary on society’s relentless pursuit of fortune and the lengths people will go to attain it. As Katie navigates this brutal contest, Feig invites us to consider the true value of wealth and the sacrifices we might make in its pursuit.
