We love a good teen romance moment and “Forever” is the next one to hit. “Forever” is about to capture hearts and dominate watchlists when it premieres on Netflix May 8. If the newly released trailer is any indication, this reimagining of Judy Blume’s iconic young adult novel is equal parts swoon-worthy and emotionally resonant.
“Forever” Premise
Created by Mara Brock Akil, the mastermind behind “Girlfriends” and “Being Mary Jane”, “Forever” brings a fresh, authentic take on young love. The series follows Keisha Clark (Lovie Simone), a confident and ambitious track star, and Justin Edwards (Michael Cooper Jr.), a secret nerd with dreams of D1 basketball glory, as they navigate their first love and the chaos that comes with it. Their journey is full of passion, self-discovery, and the messiness of being teenagers on the cusp of adulthood.
Directed by the legendary Regina King and with Judy Blume herself on board as an executive producer, this series promises to be an unforgettable experience. With a star-studded cast including Kyanna Simone, Rhoyle Ivy King, Ryan Montalvo, and more, “Forever” brings to life a powerful, diverse love story that goes beyond romance—it explores identity, dreams, and the complexity of growing up.
Joining Brock Akil behind the scenes is Academy Award–winning director and actor Regina King, who helms the show’s pilot episode and serves as an executive producer. King also credits Blume’s work with shaping her creative journey: “Judy Blume’s ability to capture the real emotions we experience during the various rites of passage of our youth influenced my life choices and writing voice.”
“I’ve always credited Judy Blume as part of the seasoning of my voice as a writer,” Brock Akil shared in an interview with Netflix. “She was one of the first writers I read who dared to be honest about the human condition in young people.” It’s a full-circle moment for the producer, who is now reimagining one of her favorite books for a new generation.
And Blume herself is on board. “It is gratifying to know that, 50 years after its release, the love story at the core of “Forever” is still resonating with audiences,” the legendary author said.
“Forever”: A Love Story That Stands the Test of Time
Blume’s “Forever” has never shied away from the intensity and vulnerability of teenage love. Yet, when Brock Akil first approached the idea of adapting the novel in 2020, Blume had her doubts about whether it could still connect in today’s world—especially given how much more exposed young people are to topics like sex and relationships.
But after a heartfelt conversation, the two women found common ground. “I got to talk to Judy, told her my perspective, and we resonated,” Brock Akil explained.
Meet Keisha and Justin
Set against the golden backdrop of 2018 Los Angeles, “Forever” follows Keisha Clark (Lovie Simone) and Justin Edwards (Michael Cooper Jr.), two Black teenagers navigating the heady highs and painful lessons of first love. Keisha is a sharp, driven track star with a bold spirit and big dreams beyond high school. Justin, a quiet intellect masked by his athletic frame, is caught between family expectations and his own self-discovery. Their connection is electric, immediate—and deeply transformative.
“All the questions we have to sort through—the first time you have sex, your first kiss, the first time you say ‘I love you’—it resonated then, and it resonates now,” said Brock Akil. These universal experiences are what make “Forever” both timely and timeless.
“Forever”: A Stellar Supporting Cast
The world of Forever is rounded out by a richly drawn ensemble:
- Karen Pittman as Dawn, Justin’s protective and ambitious mother.
- Wood Harris as Eric, Justin’s laid-back but principled father.
- Xosha Roquemore as Shelly, Keisha’s resilient and hardworking mom.
