The 2021 Emmy nominations have been announced and the real winner is…. all of us! It has truly been an incredible year for television! Granted, the pandemic had us all home and binging more content than ever… but still, unlike many years, this batch of nominees seems to reflect content that the general population has actually watched! (We mean… even Emily in Paris scored a nomination!)
Leading the pack with 24 nominations each are The Crown and The Mandalorian, followed closely by WandaVision which has 23 nominations.
Our PopViewer, Christopher, seems to speak for many viewers who, even though they were confused by WandaVision at first, held on and ultimately LOVED the series.
Streaming Sensations
Overall it was a massive morning for streaming services who, no surprise, lead the pack of nominations this year! Aided by its year-old streaming service, HBO Max, HBO came in with the most nominations of any network with 130 in total! Helping HBO reach this number is one of their original series from this year, The Flight Attendant, which was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series. There’s no doubt that this was one of our PopViewers’ favorite shows from this year. Here’s what they had to say-
Even though streaming services have picked up many nominations throughout the past years, they still actually haven’t had many big wins yet! A streamer has only won Best Drama once! (A Handmaid’s Tale) And a streamer has NEVER won for “Best Limited Series” which is without a doubt the most exciting category of the bunch this year!
The nominees in that category are as follows:
I May Destroy You (HBO)
Mare of Easttown (HBO)
The Queen’s Gambit (Netflix)
The Underground Railroad (Amazon)
WandaVision (Disney+)
Ummm…. it is virtually IMPOSSIBLE to pick a favorite here. We all binged and became chess-obsessed over The Queen’s Gambit. But also who could forget how incredible Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You was?!?
All of these excellent programs may just be edged out by Mare of Easttown which was the most recent of the bunch to make its debut and could be fresher in the minds of voters. One thing’s for sure- our PopViewers couldn’t get enough of it, and Kate Winslet sure seems like a front-runner for Best Actress with her incredible performance.
History in the Making
We’d be remiss not to shoutout MJ Rodriguez who made history as the first transgender person to land a nomination in a lead acting category for Pose. SO well deserved! Here’s what our community had to say about the show, and the performance of another nominee this year, Billy Porter!
Overall we’re so grateful that, even though this past year has undoubtedly been tough, we’ve had so much great content to keep us all entertained! We can’t wait to tune into CBS on September 19th to celebrate the work of all of these incredible artists!
