The modern-day retelling of the biblical love story drops Sept. 26 with a star-studded cast.
Tyler Perry is back again, but this time he’s teaming up with producer DeVon Franklin for a brand new Netflix film, Ruth & Boaz. The project, which reimagines the famous biblical story of Ruth, premieres on Sept. 26, and Netflix dropped the official trailer on Aug.28, to give fans a glimpse of what’s in store.
The trailer kicks off with narration from Phylicia Rashad, who sets the tone with a heartfelt reminder, “The best love stories don’t start with fireworks. Sometimes they start with the tiniest of sparks.” From there, we meet Ruth, played by Serayah and Bo, played by Tyler Lepley. As their love story begins to unfold, the sneak peek hints at a film centered around faith and the power of grace.
According to Netflix’s Tudum, the movie follows Ruth, a gifted singer from Atlanta who decides to leave her old life behind to care for an elderly widowed woman in Tennessee. What starts as a fresh beginning in a small town ends up changing everything for Ruth. Not only does she find the love of her life, but she also gains the kind of mother figure she’s always longed for. It’s equal parts romance, drama, and faith-driven storytelling.
The cast is stacked. Alongside Serayah, Lepley, and Rashad, the film features music legend Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Lecrae Moore, Jermaine Dupri, and more.
The film is directed by Alanna Brown and written by Michael Elliot, best known for Brown Sugar along with Cory Tynan. According to Variety, Ruth & Boaz marks the very first project from Tyler Perry Studios and DeVon Franklin’s new creative partnership with Netflix. Together, they’re planning to produce a slate of faith-based films that aim to inspire and uplift.
For Perry, the partnership feels like the right move at the right time. In a statement with Netflix, he shared, “I’m so excited to be working with DeVon on this and future projects. I think in this polarizing world, and at a time where the world seems to be growing colder every day, we both share the common goal of wanting to spread some good. And there’s no better place than Netflix.”
Though this is the start of a new deal, Perry is not new to collaborating with Netflix. His thriller Mea Culpa, starring Kelly Rowland, debuted at #1 on Netflix’s Top 10 English Films list. He’s also brought titles like A Jazzman’s Blues, A Madea Homecoming, and the suspense-filled A Fall from Grace to the streaming site. With Ruth & Boaz, Perry and Franklin are doubling down on stories that mix faith, hope, and heart with mainstream entertainment.
With its inspiring themes, strong cast, and the creative team behind it, Ruth & Boaz is already looking like a film that will resonate with audiences beyond just fans of faith based content. The movie is about love, family, and starting over, all wrapped in a modern take on one of the Bible’s most beloved stories.
So mark your calendars for Sept. 26, to watch the premiere of Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin’s Ruth & Boaz.
