Seth Rogen starred in “Pineapple Express” in 2008, and fans have long wondered if a sequel is in the works.
Seth Rogen on “Pineapple Express 2” Possibilities
During a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Rogen addressed the possibility. When asked if a follow-up was coming, he said, “Maybe. We can probably sell it to streaming or something.” Noting the strong fan demand, he added, “There could be. You never know. I’m not great with sequels… but maybe one day.”
A sequel was actually planned after the film’s box office success, but it was scrapped over budget issues. On The Howard Stern Show in 2020, Rogen said, “Thanks to the Sony hack, you can find the email where Sony decided to kill the movie. We were very open to it, but Sony wasn’t interested.” In 2013, Sony even released a fake Pineapple Express 2 trailer as an April Fool’s joke for Rogen’s film This Is the End.
A true sequel could be complicated, though, as Rogen and co-star James Franco are no longer friends. Multiple women accused Franco of inappropriate sexual behavior starting in 2018, and he later settled one high-profile case. In a 2024 interview with Variety, Franco admitted, “No. I haven’t talked to Seth. I love Seth, we had 20 great years together, but I guess it’s over. And not for lack of trying. I’ve told him how much he’s meant to me.”
Rogen has stayed busy with recent projects, including the critically acclaimed “Platonic” Season 2. His new show “The Studio” is also having a banner year, with the chance to win four Emmys in a single night—highlighting his continued influence in comedy and television.
