The 1987 cult classic Spaceballs is officially getting a sequel and some of the franchise’s most beloved characters are returning to the galaxy.
Amazon MGM Studios confirmed the news on Thursday, Sept. 25, with a photo from the film’s first table read. The snapshot sent fans into orbit, showing not only comedy legend Mel Brooks back in the mix, but also Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, and George Wyner reprising their iconic roles. The image also gave a first look at fresh additions to the cast including Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan, who will all be playing new characters.
Production is already underway with Josh Greenbaum attached as director. While exact plot details and even the official title are being kept under wraps for now, reports confirm that the film is slated for release in theaters in 2027.
Though fans are still in the dark about where the story will head this time, the mix of legacy cast members with a new generation of stars has already sparked plenty of buzz.
For Brooks, this project marks a massive comeback. According to the New York Post, the comedy legend hasn’t appeared on-screen since a cameo in 2005’s The Producers, the film adaptation of his own Broadway smash. In other words, Brooks stepping back into the spotlight for Spaceballs 2 is more than just a sequel, it’s a major cultural moment.
Gad has been hyping the project for a while. Back in June 2024, the actor teased fans with a cryptic Instagram post, writing, “Just handed in a film script that I think may be the funniest and best thing I’ve ever worked on and I am so freaking excited.”
Released in 1987, Spaceballs was a popular parody of the Star Wars franchise, as well as other sci-fi hits of the time. The film followed Pullman as Lone Starr, his half-man/half-dog sidekick Barf played by the late John Candy, and Zuniga as Princess Vespa. The trio was up against the evil Spaceballs led by Moranis as Dark Helmet.
The satire landed big with audiences, earning $38.1 million at the box office, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Over time, the film became a cult classic.
