“We Were Liars”: A Long-Awaited Adaptation
Originally published in 2014, “We Were Liars” quickly garnered critical acclaim, winning the Goodreads Choice Award for Best Young Adult Fiction and earning a spot on the American Library Association’s Top Ten Best Fiction for Young Adults list in 2015.
The novel’s exploration of themes like privilege, family secrets, and the consequences of one’s actions resonated with readers, leading to a resurgence in popularity through platforms like TikTok. The story follows Cadence Sinclair Eastman, a teenager from a wealthy family, as she unravels the mystery behind a traumatic event that occurred during a summer on her family’s private island.
“We Were Liars”: Bringing the Story to Screen
The television adaptation is helmed by showrunners Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie, both of whom have a history of successful collaborations on series like “The Originals”.
The cast features Emily Alyn Lind as Cadence Sinclair Eastman, bringing depth to the protagonist’s complex journey. Shubham Maheshwari portrays Gat Patil, Cadence’s love interest, while Esther McGregor and Joseph Zada take on the roles of Mirren Sinclair Sheffield and Johnny Sinclair Dennis, respectively. The adult cast includes Caitlin FitzGerald as Penny Sinclair, Mamie Gummer as Carrie Sinclair, Candice King as Bess Sinclair, Rahul Kohli as Ed Patil, and David Morse as Harris Sinclair.
The teaser trailer, set to Holly Humberstone’s “Falling Asleep at the Wheel,” opens with Cadence’s voiceover: “Once upon a time, there was a mythical land where it was always summer. We were happy. We wanted for nothing.” The idyllic scenes of beach outings and lavish parties gradually give way to a darker narrative, hinting at the underlying mystery that Cadence seeks to uncover. The trailer concludes with a haunting line: “Something terrible happened last summer. And no one will tell me what. When you’re left for dead, you want answers.”
While staying true to the source material, the series expands beyond Cadence’s first-person perspective to explore additional character viewpoints, offering a richer understanding of the Sinclair family’s dynamics. This approach aims to provide both new viewers and longtime fans with a fresh and emotionally resonant experience. “We Were Liars” premieres on June 18 on Prime Video.
