What to Watch This Weekend

Is anyone else still reeling from that epic Oprah sitdown with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry last weekend?!? While we’re tempted to simply rewatch those two hours on an endless loop this weekend, there’s still plenty of new content coming out that is worth your time! (Although, we wouldn’t judge you if you did end up just rewatching Oprah “who’s having THAT conversation” Winfrey!)

Here are the new movies that are poppin’!

Cherry

Watch on Apple TV+

Inspired by the best-selling novel of the same name, “Cherry” tells the story of a college dropout who returns home from the war in Iraq only to face a severe battle with PTSD and drug addiction back home. Anchored only by his love for his girlfriend, Cherry must battle his inner demons in a quest for purpose and human connection. Although critics have been mixed over the movie, Tom Holland has been receiving his best reviews since his Lip Sync Battle performance of “Umbrella.”

The Mauritanian

Available on Video on Demand

This movie tells the true story of Mohamedou Ould Slahi (played by Tahar Rahim) who was imprisoned and detained for years by the U.S. Government without charge. He finds allies in defense attorney Nancy Hollander (Jodie Foster) and her associate Teri Duncan (Shailene Woodley) who work to fight for justice. This is a must-see if you’re following the Oscars race! Jodie Foster just won a Golden Globe for her performance and Tahar Rahim also seems likely to receive an Oscar nomination!

Yes Day

Stream on Netflix

Shonda Rhimes’ “Year of Yes” found SHAKING! This family-friendly flick tells the story of two parents who, after always saying “no” to their kids, give their three children carte blanche for a day and let them make all of the rules. Did we mention that it also stars Jennifer Garner?!? Listen- we’re not reinventing any wheels here… but after a year of the pandemic forcing us to say no to practically all of our plans, it might be fun for a bit to escape to a world where doing anything is possible!
