What to Watch This Weekend

Dune

Watch in Theaters and on HBO Max

Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of the epic novel Dune by Frank Herbert is finally here. Sci-fi fans can rejoice as the movie’s marketing has promised that this is a film for the fans- not the critics. The jury is still out on whether this is true or not (we await your PopViewers reactions) but nonetheless, fans of the novel can go in expecting a level of detail that was absent from prior film adaptations. For those uninitiated to the world of Dune, expect to be slightly confused but satisfied on a sensory level. Essentially the movie tells the story of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) who has to travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to save the future of his family and people. Ya know, just sensible low stakes.

Queens

Watch on ABC

The Nasty Bitches are BACK baby! To clarify- the Nasty Bitches is the name of the fictional ’90s hip-hop girl group who have reunited in this ABC comedy series to perform at the biggest Black award show in the world! The series stars Naturi Naughton, Eve, Brandy, and Nadine Velazquez as the four 40-year-olds who have reunited for their chase to regain their fame and swagger. Think Girls5Eva, but with hip-hop. Will these queens reign supreme? There’s only one way to find out.

Insecure: Season 5

Watch on HBO

Issa Rae’s comedy series returns to HBO for a fifth and final season. The series focuses on the friendship of two black women and is centered around a variety of social and racial issues related to the modern-day Black experience. This season will focus particularly on Issa’s character reflecting on all of her past relationships. The only thing we’re dreading is this show ending.

THE FRENCH DISPATCH (Watch in Theaters)

Wes Anderson’s latest film is a love letter to journalists centered around an outpost of an American newspaper located in a fictional 20th-century French city. If you’re a fan of Anderson’s signature aesthetic, you have come to the right film. The film is also packed with an A-list company of actors including Timothée Chalamet, Frances McDormand, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Benicio Del Toro, and Adrien Brody.

NIGHT TEETH (Watch on Netflix)

Nothing says October like a good old-fashioned vampire movie, amiright?!? This Netflix flick tells the story of a college student who, in an effort to make some extra cash, becomes a professional driver. The only snag is… the two women he’s assigned to drive around for the night end up being vampires. The movie stars Debby Ryan and also features Megan Fox and Sydney Sweeney. Viewer beware- Fox and Sweeney only end up being in one scene. To quote the characters themselves- that sucks!

INVASION (Watch on Apple TV+)

Get your underground bunker ready! AppleTV+’s latest sci-fi series follows five people from across the world as they deal with the alien invasion happening on Earth. (Because life on Earth hasn’t been stressful enough!)

INTRODUCING SELMA BLAIR (Watch on Discovery+)

This moving documentary documents actress Selma Blair’s journey after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2018. The film documents both the impact of the disease on her mind and body while also allowing moments for Blair to reflect on her Hollywood career. Earlier this year, the documentary received the Special Jury Recognition for Exceptional Intimacy in Storytelling when it premiered at South by Southwest.

THE BACHELORETTE (Watch on ABC)

It’s Michelle Young’s turn to hand out the roses! Young was the runner-up during Season 18 of The Bachelor and now returns to the franchise in her quest to find her soulmate!

THE REAL QUEENS OF HIP HOP: THE WOMEN WHO CHANGED THE GAME (Watch on ABC and Hulu)

If you loved the first episode of “Queens” on ABC, you’re not going to want to miss this documentary about the rise of women in hip-hop. Narrated by Salt (from the iconic Salt-N-Pepa), the film features interviews with legendary artists such as Eve, Da Brat, Trina, Monie Love, Yo-Yo, and more.
